Trash Talk

The Plot: Dolemite begins when the warden calls Dolemite (Rudy Ray Moore) into his office to talk about his possible release. As the warden lays down the story, we see a flashback of how Dolemite was imprisoned. Three FBI agents corner him at his home and upon opening his car trunk, they find stolen furs and bags of cocaine inside. So it’s a 20-year stretch for Dolemite. Back in the wardens office, Queen Bee (Lady Reed), tells Dolemite about the murders on the streets and how they’re happening for no reason at all. The warden then cuts a deal with Dolemite for his possible release. If Dolemite helps put Willie Green behind bars, then he’s guaranteed a full pardon no questions asked.

Queen Bee arranges a limo ride home for Dolomite and trouble begins immediately. On the way home, he’s followed by four thugs in another car, but Dolemite disposes of them real quick with his machine gun. Once at home, and with a drink in his hand, Queen Bee tells Dolemite that things have changed and that his night club ‘The Total Experience’ is no longer his and belongs to Willie Green (D’Urville Martin). Queen Bee also explains that they owe Willie Green $50K and this is the reason he’s holding the nightclub. She proceeds to tell Dolemite that ‘his girls’ have all been trained in Kung-Fu and are now ready to go to war for him.

Now that Dolemite has an over-all picture of what’s happening in his world, he sets off to make things right. He digs up the $50K that Queen Bee owes Willie Green and pays him off giving him 24-hours (and 23 are already gone) to get out of the club. He then gathers his Kung-Fu Hookers and puts them to work inside the club. After digging a little deeper, he finds Willie Green knee-deep in drugs, murder, prostitution and other criminal activities. He also finds that Willie Green has the Mayer and the Police force in his back pocket. So Dolemite has his work cutout for him if he’s to clean up the hood and stay out of prison himself.

The Takeaway: Dolemite , technically speaking, isn’t a very well made picture. While direction isn’t the worst I’ve encountered in my many years of watching film, D’Urville Martin does manage to move Dolemite along at a nice brisk pace. The film as a whole, however, is riddled with technical mistakes. There are about a dozen or so scenes in which we see boom mics in the frame. There are also a number of scenes in which we see shadows of mics and other pieces of filmmaking equipment. The editing is also rough around the edges as many scenes seem to end abruptly or seem to end without conclusion. One case in point is when Dolemite is in bed with Pinky. While kissing on her neck, seemingly getting her worked up, the film immediately cuts to what I’m guessing is an orgasm on her part. As a pimp in the 70’s, I imagine you had to have a little game in bed, but in the case presented here, it’s glaringly obvious that Rudy Ray Moore (or maybe Pinky) wasn’t comfortable shooting the scene as there is NO chemistry between these two performers whatsoever.

Those things aside, Dolemite still manages to deliver blaxploitation at it’s finest just with a lot of mistakes. Wait a second, nearly all, if not all, blaxploitation films are riddled with mistakes, so allow me to restate that: Dolemite still manages to deliver blaxploitation at it’s finest. Clearly the film was produced to entertain an urban black audience as it covers all the typical stereotypes found in such films. Hit-men, prostitutes, pimps, drug dealers, ethnic slurs, corrupt politicians and corrupt cops. And oh yeah, let’s not forget whitey, there’s not ‘one’ good white character in the film as they’re all painted as less than appealing in terms of their moral fiber.

And this is exactly why Rudy Ray Moore as Dolemite is as bad as they come when it comes to Badasses in film. Oh, yeah, and remember “Dolemite is my name and fuckin' up mother fuckers is my game”.

Film Facts: Dolemite was directed by D’Urville Martin (Disco 9000) and was produced by Rudy Ray Moore. The film was scripted by both Moore and Jerry Jones (The Human Tornado). It was shot in and around the urban Los Angeles area and was distributed by Dimension Pictures. Dolemite was released in July of 1975 and was said to have had a budget of around $100k. Prior to Dolemite (and during Dolemite for that matter), Moore had been a standup comedian and used this occupation to fund his picture. In an interview done with Suicidegirls.com Moore discusses how he didn’t know any martial arts prior to the film (and it shows) and how he just improvised everything in order to get the scenes completed. Moore also gave himself the name Dolemite earlier in life and presented himself as such during his comedic acts.

Rudy Ray Moore would go on to do much more in film, video and TV and worked often until he passed away in 2008. He would however become an icon in blaxploitation and most well know for his role as Dolemite . Rudy Ray Moore is a very interesting character and if you want more detailed information on the man you can visit his official website .

Favorite Badass Moment: Any scene Rudy Ray Moore appears in Favorite Boobs or Boobs in a Scene: The walk-through of the ‘happy ending’ massage parlor Favorite Death Scene: Dolemite killing Willie Green by pulling out his innards

Boob Count: 7 pair Body Count: 14

IMDB Rating: 5.7 / 10 My Rating: 5.5 / 10

Final Thoughts: Dolemite is a terribly inept film. It’s because of this, Rudy Ray Moore and the Hamburger Pimp, I have to recommend it to those who love blaxploitation films.

I did, however, see a clip from the scariest, most un-sexiest sex scene I’ve ever seen. Yarg. Still adding it to my must-see list, though. Reply
