The Plot: Logan’s Run begins by introducing us to both Logan 5 (Michael York) and Francis 7 (Richard Jordan). Logan 5 is a sandman as is his friend Francis 7. We then learn that the utopia that the citizens are living under (a domed city) is run by advanced computers. These computers manage the life-span of the occupants and track the life-lock crystal implanted in the palm of their hands. We also learn that at the age of 30, the citizens are taken to “carrousel”, a place where each one goes to have a chance of being “renewed” (given life) or vaporized (eliminated).

After meeting Jessica 6 (Jenny Agutter), Logan 5 is called to go after a runner. Runners are citizens who run for their lives once their life-lock crystal turns red. A crystal turning red is a call to “carrousel”, thus potentially ending ones life. After chasing and killing one such runner, Logan 5 finds an ankh among his possessions. Logan 5 later learns that the ankh is a piece of jewelry worn by those looking to help the runners escape. Jessica 6 wears such an ankh.

Back at the domed city, Logan 5’s life-lock crystal is advanced by 4-years by the computer interrogating him. Logan 5 is then instructed by the computer to find “sanctuary”. Supposedly sanctuary is the place runners are escaping to, once fleeing the domed utopia. So Logan 5 and Jessica 6 begin their run to freedom. However, Francis 7 is hot on their tails so escaping to sanctuary may be more difficult that it first appeared.

The Takeaway: I first saw Logan’s Run as a young boy when my father took the family to the Drive-In on a Saturday night ( The Exorcist was playing two screens over). And while I didn’t fully understand the story at the time, I was amazed at how the film looked. The set pieces where beautiful, the miniature cityscape captivating and the futurist look and feel of the film captured my imagination. All this of course was dwarfed the following year when Star Wars was released. I saw Star Wars 4 times in the theaters when it was initially released. But that’s another story altogether.

Logan’s Run still manages to hold up after all these years. This is in part due to a strong story and interesting performances by interesting characters. At nearly 2 hours long, the film never seems to drag due to a nicely paced story. Some of the sets, as beautiful as they are, feel dated as does the miniature work when the camera slowly pans the cityscape in several scenes. There’s also a rather large amount of nudity for a PG rated film. Imagine a family of 5 going to see a PG rated film in which 13 pairs of boobs show up on the screen, along with a couple of quick full frontal shots. My mom, being the religious woman she was (and still is), must have been in shock (my father being just the opposite never once attending church). Of course, back in the day, PG-13 didn’t exist and rating this an R would have been ludicrous.

Film Facts: Logan’s Run was directed by Michael Anderson, written by David Zelag Goodman, shot by Ernest Laszlo and scored by Jerry Goldsmith. The film was distributed by United Artists and released in June of 1976. It was said to have had a budget of $9,000,000, grossing nearly $25,000,000 at the box office making it a success. As a director, Michael Anderson has 41 director credits on his IMDB resume. Some of the films he’s credited with are Around the World in Eighty Days (1956), Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze (1975), Orca (1977) and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1977) to name a few. David Goodman wrote a few films you may have heard of, Straw Dogs (1971), Eyes of Laura Mars (1978) and the recent remake of Straw Dogs (2011). As a cinematographer, Ernest Laszlo’s career dates back to 1928 with The Pace That Kills . He also shot films such as The Jackie Robinson Story (1950), Stalag 17 (1953), Houdini (1953) and Attack of the Puppet People (1958) to name a few. And last but not least, a name I’ve written about several times since starting this blog, Jerry Goldsmith. Just Google him, seriously, there’s too much to list, he’s a legend.

Thoughts In My Head: – These miniatures look awesome – The computerized style music is insane – Hmm, turn 30 and get terminated, I don’t like it – It seems that Logan 5’s time has been cut short by a few years, damn those computers – Jenny Agutter as Jessica 6 is so hot – Could the computers be terminating life early – Damn, Farah Fawcett is good looking – Fuck that, I’m not letting that spider-bot reconstruct my face – Wow, there are a lot of boobs in this PG rated film – Life outside of the domes look, well, like shit – No turning back now, Logan 5 – Jessica 6 is naked! – This robot is creepy (Box) – They’re using humans as a food source – Fuck you robot! – It’s the sun you idiots, have you been living under a dome or something, oh, wait… – As the journey to freedom continues, Jessica 6 gets sexier with less and less clothes on – Nail her, Logan 5! – Sanctuary is depressing – “I’ve never seen a face like that, that must be the look of being old” – Logan 5 – OK, Logan 5 and Jessica 6 have never seen anyone older than 30 – Peter Ustinov is brilliant as the old man – Oh shit, Francis 7 is back – “You are terminated” – where have I heard that before – Jenny Agutter as Jessica 6 is so hot, wait, did I say that already

Favorite Badass or Badass Moment: Sorry kids, no badass in this one Favorite Boobs or Boobs in a Scene: Although brief, Jenny Agutter as Jessica 6 Favorite Death Scene: Sorry kids, no favorite deaths in this one

Boob Count: 13 pair Body Count: 19 + 36 carrousel deaths

IMDB Rating: 6.8 / 10 My Rating: 7.5 / 10

Final Thoughts: While Logan’s Run feels a little dated, performances by York, Agutter, Jordan and Ustinov (as the old man) are all outstanding and make this worth hunting down. You can often catch this on TCM late night so DVR it for a watch. Better yet, pick up the DVD it’s well worth it.

There’s a scene when Logan 5 and Jenny 6 begin their run. In this scene they both enter a room filled with red and blue colors and an on-going orgy. The majority of the boob count comes from this scene. If you’ve only seen this film on TV, this scene was likely cut. Add Farah to the mix and it’s twice the fun. I’m glad Logan 5 escaped so that he could eventually become Austin Powers’ boss. You’re correct. Peter Ustinov is great. Even though I love this movie, it could stand to be updated with a remake. Ryan Gosling dropped out as the lead so who could play Logan 5 instead? Reply Mike on November 8, 2012 at 1:33 am said: I’d have to agree about a possible remake. And you know, I’d forgotten about Michael York being in the Powers films. Reply
