The Plot: She Freak begins in a small diner on the outskirts of town. A man working for a carnival comes in to hang some posters advertising his road-side show. Upon doing so he meets Jade Cochran (Clair Brennen), the diner’s waitress. The two talk and swap contact information and shortly afterwards Jade walks out of her waitress job to take a job at the carnival.

Time passes and Jade meets Pat (Lynn Courtney), the carnival’s sideshow stripper. The two decide to share a room at the local hotel to save on expenses. One night Jade asks Pat who the most available man working at the carnival is. We find that it’s the carnival owner Steve St. John (Bill McKinney). Jade is quickly introduced to Steve and the two hit it off and get married.

Shortly after being married, Jade takes a liking to the ferris wheel operator, Blackie (Lee Raymond) and in her spare time sneaks off to his trailer for a little ride of her own. Next thing you know, Blackie and Steve go head to head and Blackie stabs Steve, killing him. After the funeral, Jade takes ownership of the sideshow and things go down hill from there as she is only interested in the cold hard cash that the carnival brings in.

The Takeaway: I really wanted to like She Freak more than I did. You see, I have a weakness when it comes to films wrapping themselves up with the so-called ‘sideshow’ blanket. However, and although She Freak does this, it doesn’t do it as well as I had hoped. The story is interesting, yet it’s already been told by Tod Browning with his oddity film, Freaks (1932). In fact, She Freak is merely a remake of said film, but with a lot less interesting characters, or freaks for that matter. My biggest complaint with She Freak is its slow pace. There’s scene after scene of carnival tents and equipment going up or coming down. There are also numerous scenes of carnival rides, sideshow attractions and customers walking in between them. Still, and despite the issues I have with the film, I think it’s an entertaining film to watch if for nothing more than to compare it to Browning’s more popular Freaks and to see the She Freak at the end of the film.

Film Facts: She Freak was directed and edited by Byron Mabe and was written by David Friedman. Aside from She Freak , Mabe directed films such as The Lustful Turk (1968), The Acid Eaters (1968), Nude Django (1968) and The Big Snatch (1971). David Friedman has more than a handful of writing credits to his name but is best known for his production efforts on his nudie cuties such as Goldilocks and the Three Bares (1963). He also produced what they call “roughie” films such as The Defilers (1965), The Lustful Turk (1968) and The Head Mistress (1968). Friedman also worked closely with legendary filmmaker Herschell Gordon Lewis in several Lewis productions.

Thoughts In My Head: - Jade isn’t as good looking as she thinks she is - People used to drink coffee with every meal, breakfast, lunch and dinner - I have a feeling this is gonna be a long film - I also have a feeling this is a basic remake of Freaks - Blackie has eyes for Jade, googlie eyes that is - I have a sneaky suspicion that there wont be any nudity in this film - Wow, this is a slow burn - Gee, why doesn’t Jade like any of these sideshow freaks - Damn, 1:14 in and no boobs or deaths, what kind of film is this - 1:16, spoke too soon, Steve St. John is dead as Jade smiles as he dies from a knife wound - Pat is legitimately HOT, for a cooch dancer that is

Favorite Badass or Badass Moment: Sorry kids, no badasses in this one Favorite Boobs or Boobs in a Scene: Sorry kids, no boobs in this one Favorite Death Scene: While there is a death in the film, it’s nothing to write home about

Boob Count: 0 pair Body Count: 1

IMDB Rating: 2.5 / 10 My Rating: 3.5 / 10

Final Thoughts: Although She Freak is a slow burn and lingers a bit too long on the operation of a carnival and its customers, it’s a fun curiosity piece that might be worth your time.
