EP33 – The Beyond In EP33 of the Badasses, Boobs and Body Counts Podcast, your host Mike is joined by guest Steve Benningfield. Mike and Steve dive head first into Lucio Fulci’s The Beyond from 1981. This should be the first of many Fulci films to be discussed on the show and despite the films flaws, both Mike and Steve give it good marks.

Coming up in EP34 In EP34, your host Mike will be joined by guest Kelly Kile to discuss the first found footage film the show will cover (and likely the last) with Incident at Loch Ness (2004) starring Werner Herzog. With Kelly being the cryptomaniac that he is and with Mike being the skeptic that he is, this should prove to be a fun show with some interesting discussion.

You mentioned in particular one scene that made no sense to you which happens to be my favorite moment of the film. When Emily runs away in slow motion and Liza so to speak rewinds the tape in her mind several times. Actually it’s a bit like in Argento’s “Deep Red” where Marcus (Hemmings) also rewinds his tape because he knows that there was something odd. And then the penny drops. Emily runs through the door and not into it. But she is blind…?! Her dog follows her. So can Emily see? At least sometimes? Liza is realizing that and the movie shows her thought process. I always loved that scene. Emily is a ghost and the world of the living and the dead get more and more interwoven. I guess Emily as a ghost can only be killed when she is on the other side. When her dog attacks her she maybe is. On the other side (the beyond) ghosts or souls are vulnerable. Otherwise hell wouldn’t make much sense, would it? :D Perhaps she is just blind in the real world. When her demise comes she actually is blind. So what’s wrong here? She can’t see the zombies. But also the dog is able to kill her. Could be that I put way too much thought into that but I think it means that reality and the beyond have become the same place at that point. A mixture of both sets of rules now. She is a ghost, still can be killed and that she is blind means that hell now isn’t so beyond anymore… Sorry for my clumsy English, I hope you got my points. Greetings from Germany! Reply

I say that because you can certainly twist your brain trying to figure out what Lucio Fulci was thinking with this particular sequence. Truth is, we may never know. Regardless, I’m very happy you stumbled across the show and hope you enjoy the archives we have posted along with the weekly shows we release. If you ever have any suggestions/questions/comments or thoughts, feel free to swing by and post them. Mike Reply

To travel to and from you phase shift through one of the seven gates. Hence why the zombies want her back. The sequence where she runs through the doorway a few times I cannot explain either, nor can I explain why Jill’s Mother screams in the hospital room. Maybe she saw one of the zombies move or it was just a typical day on the set with Fulci! Some of the scenes with Martha are strange she seems to accept what is going on. I suspect that Joe and Martha were like John and Liza several years ago and had similar issues with the Beyond. There’s a prequel idea! © me! Keep up the marvelous work Mike. Reply

Love this movie, and I’m a huge fan of 80’s Italian horror, I remember the huge-box VHS of “7 Doors of Death” sitting on the horror shelf of my local Mom & Pop video store. Man I miss those days!
