Mike is joined once again this week by Mark Sering of the Hollywood Upside Down Podcast to discuss the Doris Wishman directed film, The Amazing Transplant (1970). We drink, bring Doris Wishman back from the dead and Mark’s passion for Wishman films is evident by the length of this episode. Honestly, we should not have gone over 30-minutes on this one. Hey that’s OK, we had a TERRIFIC time during this episode as you will by listening to it.

We also go through a variety of Facebook input and several voicemails during this episode. We hope you enjoy the show as it came together nicely.

Coming Up Next Week: In EP66, Mike and Iris will discuss the Harold P. Warren directed film, Manos: The Hands of Fate. Joining us for this episode will be Jackey Raye Neyman Jones aka Jackey Neyman aka little Debbie, from the film. Along with discussing one of the worst films ever made, we hope to get some insight on the film by speaking with Jackey.

Show Notes: Flesh Gordon (IMDB) : Tuning in to SciFi TV : 100 Years of Horror

The Plot: A Taste of Blood begins when a package arrives at the office of John Stone (Bill Rogers). After his secretary signs for the package, she leaves the office to deliver it to him as he’s working from home. Once the package arrives, we’re introduced to his beautiful wife, Helene (Elizabeth Wilkinson). Both John and Helene are at home putting golf balls on the living-room floor.

Upon opening the box, John reads a letter stating that the two bottles of blood red Slivovitz brandy comes from his recently deceased ancestor in England. To celebrate his new found fortune (he’s been left an estate), John opens one of the bottles and drinks from it, later becoming a vampire. Shortly after this, John’s personality begins to change. He becomes distant from his wife and his friend, Hank (William Kerwin).

As the story unfolds, John begins to travel more and we find him in England searching for the descendants of those who killed Count Dracula. His search leads him to the Van Helsing family. Meanwhile, back in Miami, Dr. Howard Helsing (Otto Schlessinger) teams up with Hank and awaits Johns return in order to kill him saving Helene from certain doom.

The Takeaway: A Taste of Blood is an average at best re-telling of Dracula (1931). The films direction, editing and pacing are tough to swallow as the story has been told countless times (and much better I might add) and the performances from each cast member is lackluster. The run-time is also overly long (just under 2-hours) as the films pace is terribly slow. Director Lewis also gets dangerously close to “Ed Wood” territory as there are several continuity errors throughout the film. During one scene with a ship docked at a London port, you can see high-rise apartment buildings and hotels from the Miami shoreline (where the film was shot). Then there are driving scenes where some shots are at night and others during the day (all in one supposed sequence). Last but not least, there’s a lack of gore in the film and when compared to earlier Lewis films, this is a let down considering he built his career on such scenes.

Film Facts: A Taste of Blood was directed and produced by Herschell Gordon Lewis. The film was distributed by Creative Film Enterprises Inc. in August of 1967 and was said to have had a budget of $65,000. The screenplay was written by Donald Stanford and according to sources, was the only screenplay Stanford wrote. The only notable actor in the film was William Kerwin (as Hank) as he appeared in many of Lewis’ other films and actually had somewhat of a career appearing in well over a 100 different film and TV productions. The stunningly beautiful Elizabeth Wilkinson only appeared in one other film, Suburban Roulette (1968 – also directed by Lewis) then just simply disappeared from the business.

Lewis did manage to make a name for himself, The Godfather of Gore, as many, if not all his films, were filled with violence and gore. His more noted films are Blood Feast (1963), Two Thousand Maniacs (1964), Color Me Blood Red (1965), The Gruesome Twosome (1967) and my favorite of the bunch, The Wizard of Gore (1970). Lewis also managed to anger women’s rights groups since the majority of his films were violent against women. The exception here is She-Devils on Wheels (1968), where an all girl biker club exploits men and uses them as sex objects.

Thoughts In My Head: – That’s my idea of a good time, chasing golf-balls on a living-room floor – Lemme guess, drinking the blood colored brandy turns you into a vampire – Helene’s cleavage looks inviting – A ring that hypnotizes people, OK… – “You’re looking awfully pale dear” says Helene to her vampire husband – That’s the fucking most ridiculous ring I’ve ever seen – Shit, still no tits – Will Helene succumb to her vampire husband, Do I really care, NO… – This is a long fucking movie

Favorite Badass or Badass Moment: Sorry kids, no badasses in this one Favorite Boobs or Boobs in a Scene: Sorry kids, no boobs in this one Favorite Death Scene: none, serially, each death scene was simply boring

Boob Count: 0 pair Body Count: 5

IMDB Rating: 4.4 / 10 My Rating: 3.5 / 10

Final Thoughts: While A Taste of Blood isn’t a complete waste of time, there are far better vampire films with much shorter running times I’d rather watch.
