EP31 – StarCrash on planet TerrorVision In EP31 of the Badasses, Boobs and Body Counts Podcast, your host Mike is joined by Mugumbo aka Lewis Cougill of the Traumatic Cinematic show. Mike and Lewis first explore TerrorVision (1986) and then step into Star Wars territory with StarCrash (1978). Mike and Lewis knock heads over both films as Lewis has a love for TerrorVision and Mike a love for StarCrash. In any case, this was a fun show to record as Lewis is a colorful character to say the least.

The Plot: Death Race 2000 begins by introducing its 5 main race competitors. Calamity Jane (Mary Woronov), Machine Gun Joe Viterbo (Sylvester Stallone), Matilda the Hun (Roberta Collins), Nero the Hero (Martin Kove) and the predicted winner, Frankenstein (David Carradine). The strongest rivalry of the bunch is that of Viterbo and Frankenstein as they constantly go at each other.

As the race begins we see that the object is to kill innocent pedestrians for points. The point breakdown goes something like this: Women = 10 points, Teenagers = 40 points, Race officials = 50 points, Children under 12 = 70 points and Senior Citizens = 100 points.

As the film progresses we learn that there is an underlying plot, but in general, Death Race 2000 is all about scene after scene of human carnage on the road with the occasional break allowing the racers to interact with each other during nude massages and elegant dinners.

The Takeaway: Death Race 2000 is clearly a piece of 1970’s low budget schlock. It looks and feels cheap, yet to this day it manages to work on an entertaining level. The underlying story of the film, Government, religion and massed-produced violence, ends up playing second-fiddle to the race itself and its over-the-top comic-book like characters. While I get that there’s a story, I only wanted to see more of the cheaply designed cars and the running over of innocent pedestrians in the streets. I’m not sure what that says about me.

As far as the film goes, it’s an above average production brought to you by the one and only Roger Corman. The film is fast paced with tons of quick-cuts on the deaths and more boobs than one would think fits into this genre of road race film. The films single strongest point is its 81-minute run time. Had it been any longer it may have been hard to sit through.

Film Facts: Death Race 2000 was directed by Paul Bartel and produced by Roger Corman. It was distributed by New World Pictures and was released in April of 1975. The films budget was said to have been $300,000, grossing a massive $5,000,000 making it a huge financial success for producer Roger Corman. Director Paul Bartel has an interesting resume as he’s shot films such as Cannonball (1976), Eating Raul (1982) and The Longshot (1986). You may have seen Bartel in Corman’s Piranha (1978) as he played Mr. Dumont the camp counselor. Roger Corman, well, do I really need to go into his resume? OK, maybe just a bit. He’s produced over 400 film/TV titles and directed over 50. In short, he’s a B-movie GOD.

Thoughts In My Head: – These futuristic cars look ridiculous – Can’t be much of a race with only 5 cars in it – Mr. President is full of shit – I think teenagers should be worth 100+ points – Fucking awesome, the old farts want to die, but Frankenstein rolls over the nurses instead – “if they scatter, go for the baby and the mother” Oh my… – I see that keeping these cars clean is important to the racers – Grace Pander needs to back off those morning donuts – How sweet, a romantic moment between Frankenstein and his navigator – HAHA, Frankenstein killed the Pope – Whooa, Frankenstein’s navigator is a traitor – I hope they kill Mr. President – Clearly, Carradine taught Stallone how to box for the film Rocky – There’s plenty of T and A in this film, and I’m loving it – So there, and fuck you pit crew! (as Viterbo runs them down) – I’m amazed these cars have held together as cheap as they look – The French have been the enemy for many years running

Favorite Badass or Badass Moment: Frankenstein Favorite Boobs or Boobs in a Scene: Myra, her rack is simply glorious, what a set! Favorite Death Scene: Frankenstein running over the row of nurses allowing the elders to live

Boob Count: 5 pair Body Count: 27

IMDB Rating: 6.2 / 10 My Rating: 7.0 / 10

Final Thoughts: Death Race 2000 is another schlocky Roger Corman production that works on many levels. The idea is silly, yet it’s so much fun to watch. And the cars, oh my, the cars, are cheesetastic! You’re doing yourself a disservice if you haven’t seen this classic yet.
