The Plot: Porky’s begins in the early morning when a group of friends meet at Angel Beach High School. Pee Wee (Dan Monahan), Meat (Tony Ganios), Mickey (Roger Wilson), Timmy (Cyril O’Reilly) and Billy (Mark Herrier) are all laughing at the events that occurred the night before. It seems that Pee Wee (the virgin of the group and apparently the only virgin left in school) had an opportunity to get laid but upon removing his underpants, Wendy (Kaki Hunter), the volunteer who offered up her services, laughed at him for already having a rubber on. As the guys all laugh at Pee Wee for his misfortune, this sets the tone for the rest of the film as his friends will stop at nothing in order to get him laid.

This sets up the next scene where Pee Wee and the rest of the boys head out to the swamps where Cherry Forever (Susan Clark), the local whore, has agreed to sleep with all of them for a little bit of cash. What the boys don’t know is this is all a setup. As they all get undressed and readied for Cherry Forever, they hear a ruckus in the next room where Cherry is. Suddenly, the door comes crashing down and large black man covered in blood and holding a machete comes running towards them. This scatters the boys into the swamps, naked no less, and all but Pee Wee figure out that it’s a joke. Pee Wee ends up running down the State highway where the sheriff eventually picks him up.

Back at the burger joint in town, Pee Wee is dropped off by the sheriff and tells the gang he really needs to get laid. It’s here they all agree to take Pee Wee to Porky’s. Porky’s is a bar located in the swamps and offers more than just dancing and music (if you know what I mean). At the bar, the boys demand to see Porky and upon doing so, he agrees to let the boys have some time with his girls. The boys are then lead into a dark room where Porky tells them the girls are waiting, but after a few minutes and with the whole bar watching, Porky pulls a lever dumping the horny teens into the swamp below. This incident sets up the remaining hour of the film as a hard-headed Mickey is set on revenge and Pee Wee is set on getting laid.

The Takeaway: There’s a whole lot more going on Porky’s than what I’ve outlined in the plot above. There are a few layers of sub-text that I didn’t touch on as the ‘main’ plot of the film revolves around Pee Wee getting laid. Porky’s , however, touches down on a few other things, one which is racism and the ability to overcome it. Slurs about Jews and blacks are delivered casually throughout the film with no real repercussions. This, however, is more or less rectified when the ‘racist’ realizes he’s wrong and gets together with the ‘Jew’ he hated so much in order to seek revenge on Porky and his establishment.

As far as the technical aspects of the film goes, director Bob Clark manages to connect with his audience (on some level anyway) through his script. Although the script is adolescent in many ways, it’s still well written and manages to get plenty of laughs through slapstick dialogue, jokes and pranks sprinkled throughout. This is mostly due to the cast chosen for the film. Just about each and every performance is believable, and truth be told, we’ve all encountered some of the shenanigans shown to us on screen, in our younger years (though maybe not as extreme). Clark also manages to move the film along at a nice pace through direction and editing as there are no “real” dull moments to be found.

So if you’re a fan of films such as Fast Times at Ridgemont High , Revenge of the Nerds , Risky Business or the somewhat newer American Pie , then Porky’s should be right up your alley as it has stood the test of time and should be looked at as one of the more successful earlier teen sex comedies.

Film Facts: Porky’s was written and directed by Bob Clark and was filmed in and around the Fort Lauderdale, Florida area. It was distributed by Twentieth Century Fox and was released in March of 1982. It was said to have a budget of around $4,000,000 and to have grossed $110,000,000 domestically making it one of the most successful Canadian produced films in history. Prior to Porky’s , Clark directed the now cult classic Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things and Black Christmas . Clark would also go on to direct what is now considered “one” of the most endearing Christmas films ever made, A Christmas Story .

Susan Clark (Cherry Forever), would become best known for her role as Katherine in the TV series Webster . Alex Karras (Porky’s brother and sheriff) was also featured in Webster as Katherine’s husband (Susan and Alex were real life husband and wife). Karras is probably best known for his days as an NFL player for the Detroit Lions (1958–1962 and 1964-1970). Karras also appeared as Mongo in the film Blazing Saddles . Out of all those who appeared in Porky’s , Kim Cattrall would become the best known as her career blossomed afterwards. She became a household name when she first appeared in HBO’s Sex in the City in 1998. That series lasted six years and spawned two major motion pictures afterwards.

Favorite Badass Moment: The boys tearing down Porky’s Favorite Boobs or Boobs in a Scene: The boys peeking into the girls locker, the second time around Favorite Death Scene: Sorry kids, no deaths in this one

Boob Count: 9 pair (with some ass and bush on the side) Body Count: 0

IMDB Rating: 5.9 / 10 My Rating: 7.0 / 10

Final Thoughts: Porky’s seems to be hit or miss with those who see it. I for one love it and recommend it for those who love teen sex comedies.
