Coming up in EP02 Mike will be joined by Jamie Jenkins of the Devour The Podcast to talk about Steven Spielberg’s Jaws (1975) and William Friedkin’s The Exorcist (1973). I have a feeling this will be an epic show due to the content we’ll be discussing as both films are well coveted by both hosts.

The Plot: Cannibal Ferox (aka Let Them Die Slowly ) begins when Mike (Giovanni Lombardo Radice) and Joe (Walter Lucchini) are both on the run from some New York City mobsters. We quickly learn that both these fine gentlemen left the country with $100K of the mob’s money and are headed to the Amazon in search of drugs and jewels. Also headed for the Amazon are Rudy (Danilo Mattei), Gloria (Lorraine De Selle), and Pat (Zora Kerova). These three are out to prove that cannibalism in the modern age does not exist through a thesis that Gloria is writing for her doctrine.

Upon arriving in the Amazon, the three find themselves on foot after their jeep gets stuck in the mud. In the thick of the jungle, they run into Mike and his side-kick Joe (who’s injured) and come to find that both had just escaped a tribe of flesh eating cannibals. As Mike tells what happened, disbelief sets in and you’re left wondering if his story is true or not. Nevertheless, even after Mike’s horrible story, they press forward and mistakenly find themselves in the middle of the tribes camp.

With the exception of a few elder tribesman, the camp is nearly empty. So with little threat around, and an injured man, the group decides to make camp in an empty hut. After settling in while Mike and Pat are away, Joe tells Rudy and Gloria what really happened and how he became injured. It seems that Mike went on a cocaine binge and lost all control torturing and killing several tribesmen. Shortly after Joe’s story, he dies from his injury and the tribe leaders return from their excursion. With a camp full of hungry, angry cannibals and a handful of victims, the tribe exacts revenge on Mike and the rest of the intruders.

The Takeaway: I have mixed feelings in regards to Cannibal Ferox . I’m a gore-hound at heart and tend to rate films with large amounts of well-done gore slightly higher, more so than those with leser amounts. However, I also know when I’m watching a film that uses gore to capture its audience. Cannibal Ferox is one such film. While Umberto Lenzi’s direction, editing, and make-up effects (created by Gino De Rossi) are top notch, his story and character weaknesses are clearly evident. Lorraine De Selle as Gloria refuses to believe what she sees during her trip to the Amazon and we’re forced to watch her break-down time and time again in denial of what has happened. At one point we’re even forced to watch her sing a song during all this madness in an attempt to bring some sanity back to what’s become an insane situation. Giovanni Lombardo Radice (aka John Morghen) as Mike, also goes a bit over the top. However, I think his performance can be attributed to the actor used to dub his voice. And as a group of so-called educated people, it’s hard to believe that anyone would venture into the unknown Amazon so unprepared, let alone stay in a village after seeing an impaled half-eaten human at the village center.

So why all the fuss? What got this film banned in 31 countries?

Let’s start with the real animal slaughters. Out of the five animal deaths, two are by natural selection, more or less, and the remaining three are done at the hands of humans. We see a rather large anaconda swallow-up some sort of rodent and a jungle tiger doing what it does to survive, preying on food (a small monkey in this case). The other three killings are that of a small pig, a small crocodile and a rather large turtle. All three are killed by natives, and not by actors, yet they are still disturbing to watch. Animal rights activist must have had a field day with this film. Lets move on and torture some humans shall we?. Although much less impact-full, because we know they’re not real, they are still very disturbing and not for the faint of heart. You’ll see an eye plucked from one of the native’s, a penis get sliced off and eaten, a woman hung by her breasts with large meat-hooks, a man split in two and his innards yanked out, and the decapitation of Mike Logan, in which the natives finish the task by eating his brain. In each and every case, you get to see these things happen in all their glory. The effects here are absolutely terrific and 100% convincing. It’s easy to see why so many countries still have a ban on this film.

Film Facts: Cannibal Ferox was written and directed by Umberto Lenzi. The film was shot by Giovanni Bergamini and edited by Enzo Meniconi. All the films special effects where created by Gino De Rossi. The film was shot in and around New York City and parts of the Amazon jungle. It was distributed by Grindhouse Releasing and released in April of 1981. Umberto Lenzi’s career spanned many years and as a director his resume contains 65 films to date. Some titles include Eyeball (1975), The Manhunt (1975), Eaten Alive! (1980), Nightmare City (1980) and Daughter of the Jungle (1982) just to name a few. He is however most remembered for Cannibal Ferox . Gino De Rossi, whom I’m a big fan of, also has a rather large resume in terms of his special effects work. Some of the films on his resume are Holocaust 2000 (1977), The Inglorious Bastards (1978), Zombie (1979), City of the Living Dead (1980), The Raiders of Atlantis (1983) and Burial Ground: The Nights of Terror (1981) to name a few. I’m happy to say (as of this writing) that Gino De Rossi is still alive and working to this day. Last thing to note is the films music score. Riz Ortolani manages to put together a daunting, if not haunting, score that moves along with the films themes and moods. Ortolani had an amazing career scoring music for nearly 200 films including Ruggero Deodato’s House on the Edge of the Park (1980) and what has become the cruelest and most noted cannibal film of all time, Cannibal Holocaust (1980).

Thoughts In My Head: – The word “twat” is every bit as offensive as the word “cunt”, if not more – Bitch slapping women calms them down – It’s not a good idea to stay in a village full of cannibals – Getting your penis sliced off with a machete has got to hurt – Singing a soothing melody while in captivity of cannibals won’t help your situation – Awesome, the natives also think that bitch slapping women calms them down – Meat-hooks to the boobs is surely painful – OK, no woman should ever have hairy arm-pits – The word “twat” is used four times during the film

Favorite Badass or Badass Moment: Sorry kids, no badasses in this one Favorite Boobs or Boobs in a Scene: Pats, considering she’s the only one to show her boobs Favorite Death Scene: Mike Logan, he loses hi head, literally

Boob Count: 2 pair Body Count: 13

IMDB Rating: 5.1 / 10 My Rating: 7.5 / 10

Final Thoughts: Cannibal Ferox sets out to deliver a gruesome shocking experience. It succeeds in doing so, but only to a point. Some will find the story lackluster, the acting undesirable and the real animal slaughters unwatchable. Others will find it artful, genius and in an odd way, a landmark film. Regardless of how you end up feeling about the film, there’s no denying its power. Umberto Lenzi succeeds in shocking the viewer in more ways than one.
